Setting Up Your Glowforge Pro: A 5-Step Checklist for Small Business Owners

If you just unboxed a Glowforge Pro and are staring at a pile of plywood, acrylic, and hope—this is for you. Or if you're an office admin (like me) who got tasked with setting one up for a small team or classroom. I bought ours in early 2024 after a year of hemming and hawing between this and a cheaper diode laser. The Pro won out because of the bed size and the fact that it can actually mark metal.
This isn't a full manual. It's the checklist I wish I had—the stuff I had to learn the hard way. Five steps, no fluff.
Step 1: Measure Your Bed—Don't Trust the Specs Blindly
The Glowforge Pro bed size is advertised as 19.5" x 11" (or 20" x 12" if you're counting the full area). That's true for the cutting area, but here's the thing nobody tells you: the usable space is slightly less if you want to use the camera for positioning. The camera's alignment zone is about 19" x 10.5".
I found this out when I tried to cut a 19" long piece of acrylic for a sign. The design looked fine in the preview, but the laser started cutting about a quarter-inch off the edge. The part I wanted was technically within the cut zone, but the camera's margin of error meant I lost the piece. (Note to self: always add a 0.5" margin around the edges of the bed.)
Checklist item: Test your usable area by cutting a simple square at the farthest edge of the bed. Adjust your designs accordingly.
Step 2: Get the Material Settings Right (or Just Waste a Test Piece)
Glowforge's built-in material presets are decent, but they're not perfect. The 'Premium' settings for materials like cherry wood or acrylic are often too aggressive for small-batch work. I ruined a $40 sheet of clear acrylic because I trusted the default 'clear acrylic – thick' setting. It melted the edges.
What I do now: for every new material, I cut a small 2" x 2" test square. I'll try two or three variations of speed and power on that one scrap piece. It takes 10 minutes but saves me from wasting good material (and money). For laser engraved metal, the Glowforge Pro uses a marking compound like CerMark or Enduramark. The default power setting for marking metal is usually too low for deep marks—crank it up to 90-100% power and slow the speed to 10-20% for good contrast.
Step 3: Laser Engraved Photos? Adjust Your Image First
Laser engraved photos look amazing on wood, but the camera preview in the Glowforge interface can deceive you. The software does a grayscale conversion automatically, but it's not great at preserving contrast. Photos that look clear on your screen can end up as muddy blobs on birch plywood.
The trick: pre-process your photo in any free photo editor. Bump up the contrast by about 30%, and convert it to grayscale manually. The Glowforge's engraving mode uses dithering, and high-contrast images yield much better results. I learned this after engraving a bunch of pet portraits for a client's fundraiser—only half the faces came out recognizable. The ones that popped had stronger contrast settings. (Mental note: always offer a test engrave on a small piece before doing the whole batch.)
Step 4: For Laser Cutter Designs, Start Simple
Laser cutter designs are where most people get stuck. You grab a complicated vector file from a template site, import it, and then spend an hour troubleshooting why the layers aren't aligning. The Glowforge interface handles SVGs well, but it doesn't always interpret overlapping lines or nested cuts the way you expect.
The advice I give beginners: start with a simple shape—a monogrammed keychain, a small box, a coaster set. Use Glowforge's own design interface or a free tool like Inkscape. And always export as a single-layer SVG. Complex multi-layer files (like from Illustrator) often import as separate layers that the Glowforge reader misaligns.
Checklist item: Before running your first big design, run a 'Preview' scan of the entire bed. Look for any blue lines that seem out of place—those indicate alignment errors.
Step 5: Watch for Dust and Focus
This is the boring one that everyone skips. The Glowforge Pro has a built-in camera and autofocus, but dust on the lens or the rails can cause focus errors. I didn't clean the machine for about three months after we got it. Then one day, it started engraving at different depths across the bed—some parts were deep, some were barely scratched.
Turns out, the lens had a film of residue from cutting acrylic and wood. Once I cleaned it (just a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner), the autofocus worked perfectly again. The manual says to clean it after every 10 hours of use. I do it every 5 hours now (which, honestly, is still more than most people will).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the things that tripped me up, especially when I was juggling orders for small clients:
- Ignoring the specs for small batches: The Glowforge Pro bed size is generous for a desktop unit, but commercial users often push it. If you're doing 100 identical coasters, you'll run multiple passes. Plan for it.
- Thinking "engrave" and "cut" settings are forever: They're not. Material moisture, thickness, and even ambient temperature affect results. Always test a small area first.
- Assuming the camera is perfect: It's good, but it's not a reference tool. The camera alignment drifts slightly over time. Run a calibration print (a small grid of circles) every month to verify.
And one more thing—if you're buying this for a small business, the Glowforge Pro is a solid investment. But don't expect it to replace a $5,000 commercial laser for high-volume metal cutting. It's not that kind of machine. It's perfect for prototypes, small runs, and custom gifts—which is exactly what a small operation needs.
