Glowforge Pro vs. Handheld Laser Welder vs. Custom Sheet Metal: Which Solution Saves Your Small Business Time & Money?

Three Options, One Decision

When I took over purchasing for our 50-person product development company in 2022, one of the first requests I got was: “We need a way to make prototypes and small-batch parts in-house.” Our engineers were tired of waiting weeks for custom sheet metal quotes for simple brackets and enclosures, and the marketing team wanted engraved acrylic signs for events.

Custom Cut Sheet Metal Service

Outsourcing to a sheet metal fabricator means “zero upfront.” You pay per part. But for small quantities (say, 5–50 pieces), the per-part price is steep—expect $15–$40 per part for laser-cut steel with bending, depending on complexity. Larger runs (500+) bring it down to $5–$10 per part.

The hidden cost: Shipping and lead time. A typical online metal fabrication shop (like SendCutSend or local shops) quotes 5–10 business days. Rush orders can double the part price. Oh, and setup fees for custom dies or nesting if your parts are odd shapes.

My short take: The Glowforge Pro wins for high-volume, non-metal prototypes. The handheld laser welder wins if you routinely need on-site metal repairs. Outsourcing wins if you need one-off complex metal parts and don’t have the volume to justify a machine.

The uncomfortable truth: No single solution covers everything. If your needs are 80% non-metal + 20% metal marking, the Glowforge Pro does both with coatings. If you need real metal welding, buy a dedicated machine. If you need complex metal parts in small quantities, outsource.

Dimension 3: Ease of Use & Learning Curve

The web-based interface, camera alignment, and auto-focus make it almost “print from your computer.” Our marketing intern was making engraved coasters within an hour. Surprise winner: For a busy admin who just wants parts, outsourcing is the simplest. For a maker who wants hands-on control, the Glowforge Pro wins.

Dimension 4: Total Cost of Ownership (12-Month View)

Let’s run a hypothetical: a small business that needs 200 engraved acrylic signs (non-metal), 50 steel brackets (metal), and 20 custom aluminum enclosures per year.

  • Glowforge Pro: $5,995 + $2,000 materials + $500 maintenance = $8,495. But no outsourcing for signs—saves ~$4,000 in vendor costs. Net cost: ~$4,500.
  • Handheld welder: $5,000 avg. + $1,000 gas/consumables + $2,000 materials for brackets = $8,000. Still need to outsource signs and enclosures (another $5,000). Total: $13,000.

In this mix, the Glowforge Pro is the most cost-effective (but only if you value internal speed and flexibility). The handheld welder only makes sense if you have a high volume of metal welding—say 500+ brackets a year.

So Which One Should You Buy? (Hint: It Depends)

I can’t give you one answer—that would be dishonest. But here’s my framework after running the numbers for three different company scenarios:

Buy a Glowforge Pro if:

  • You need rapid prototyping with wood, acrylic, leather, and marked metal.
  • Your typical bed size fits within 19.5″×11″.
  • You value same-day turnarounds for non-metal parts.
  • You have a dedicated space with ventilation (or are willing to add it).
  • You’re a small business that can’t afford to wait for custom quotes. (Small doesn’t mean unimportant—it means potential. The vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders.)

Buy a handheld laser welder if:

  • Metal welding or repair is a daily/weekly task.
  • You mostly work with stainless, steel, or aluminum.
  • You have a trained operator (or time to train).
  • Your parts rarely require wood or acrylic work.

Stick with custom cut sheet metal if:

  • Your metal parts are complex (multi-bend, tight tolerances) and you don’t need them immediately.
  • Your volume is low (under 20 pieces per part number).
  • You don’t want to manage another machine and consumables.
  • You can afford the lead time and shipping costs.

My honest recommendation for most small product companies: Start with the Glowforge Pro for in-house rapid prototyping (non-metal). Combine it with a reliable custom sheet metal service for metal parts. Skip the handheld welder unless you’re doing heavy metalwork. That combo gave us the best of both worlds—speed and quality—without overcommitting to capex.
