Every edge came out charred, and I had to re-cut the whole batch. $80 of material, plus a full day I'll never get back. It's tempting to think you can just press Print and walk away. But cardboard's thickness and corrugation change the heat behavior completely.

Can You Laser Etch Glass? Yes, But With More Prep Than You Think
The question I get asked most is "can you laser etch glass?" The short answer is yes. The Glowforge Pro laser engraver can create a crisp, frosted mark on glass that reads as white or milky. But the process is fragile. The machine applies a lot of heat to a brittle surface, and if you don't prepare it, you'll get micro-cracks instead of a clean result.

- Clean the glass with isopropyl alcohol. Even fingerprints can cause uneven marking.

- Focus verified for the actual material height. Even 2 mm off makes the mark look blurry.
- Air assist on and flowing. It keeps the beam path clear and reduces charring.

3. Patching symptoms instead of fixing the cause
When a test piece comes out slightly burned, it's tempting to nudge the file and move on. I did that more times than I want to admit. But a burn is a clue. It points to focus, speed, or a dirty lens. Fix the root cause, and the rest of the batch actually stays clean.
