If you're evaluating the Glowforge Pro for a small business, you've probably got a running list of questions. Wattage specs. Lens maintenance. What it can actually cut. Vector versus raster. I manage purchasing for a 50-person company—about $75K a year in office and equipment spend across a handful of vendors—and I've run hundreds of jobs on our Glowforge Pro laser cutter since we bought it in 2023. Here's what I learned the useful way, and some of it the hard way.
What wattage is the Glowforge Pro?
The Glowforge Pro has a 45-watt CO2 laser tube. That's straight from Glowforge's official spec sheet (glowforge.com, accessed January 2025). The Basic and Plus models run a 40-watt tube, so the Pro's spec advantage looks small on paper. It's not just about the 5 watts though. It's what that extra power does for cutting thicker material and keeping job times down.
When I first started researching laser cutters, I assumed wattage was the only number that mattered. More watts, better machine, end of story. That's not exactly how it works. The Pro's real strengths are the larger work area and the pass-through slot for long material. The wattage matters most when you're cutting thick stock regularly. If you're mostly engraving flat blanks, you might not notice the difference as much as you'd expect.
What can the Glowforge Pro actually cut and engrave?
The Pro handles wood, acrylic, leather, glass, stone—for engraving—and coated metal for marking. Solid wood and plywood up to about an inch thick cut in two passes. Acrylic up to half an inch cuts in a single pass. We use walnut, oak, and birch plywood for signage and awards every week.
One thing you'll see a lot of online is metal engraving. The Pro can mark anodized aluminum and stainless steel, but "mark" is doing a lot of work there. It does not cut sheet metal—not even thin sheet metal. For that you need an industrial fiber laser, which is a different price universe entirely. Worth knowing before you buy.
Also: not every "laser-safe" blank on Amazon behaves the same. We burned through maybe $150 worth of materials in our first quarter testing leather thicknesses and acrylic brands. Some of it charred ugly, some of it wouldn't take a clean mark. The consistency varies more than the product photos suggest.
When do I need to replace the laser lens?
The lens doesn't have a fixed replacement schedule like an air filter. It needs replacing when it gets dirty or damaged enough that cleaning won't restore performance.
For us, the first replacement came after about 10 months of regular use. We run the machine 6–10 hours a week on average. The warning signs were subtle at first—engraving came out a bit faded, cut edges had more charring than usual. I blamed our material supplier. It wasn't the wood. It was the lens.
We didn't have a formal maintenance process when we got the machine. That cost us a week of inconsistent output and a long phone call with support before I figured it out. Now we inspect the lens monthly and give it a proper cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and lens wipes. The third time we almost ordered the wrong replacement part, I finally put together a checklist. What are the best laser engraving applications for a small business?

- Prototypes and mockups—the marketing team tests product ideas before production.
Here's where the quality question comes in. When we send a client a custom-engraved walnut plaque, it lands differently than a printed certificate. The engraved piece signals permanence and care. Our marketing director started using engraved pieces for key clients, and several of those ended up sitting on desks in photos months later. That's brand presence for about $8–15 in materials per item. Compare that against what we spend on promotional print materials that get tossed in a drawer.
Is the engraving worth the extra effort? For us, absolutely—not because the materials are expensive, but because the output quality changes how the recipient perceives the gesture.
Vector vs raster: what's the difference and when do I use each?
This trips up almost every new user, and it's worth getting straight because it changes how you prepare files.
Raster engraving is like a very precise printer. The laser head scans back and forth, burning a pattern into the surface. It's how you get photos, detailed artwork, and shaded designs. Slower than vector, but you get smooth tonal gradations that vector can't produce.
Vector cutting follows a path. The laser traces an outline like a pen drawing a shape, cutting through the material along the way. This is how you cut shapes out of wood and acrylic. It also does crisp line engraving for text and simple graphics.
We use raster for anything with gradients or photo content, and vector for all cutting plus text. It's tempting to raster everything because the file setup feels familiar. But for clean line art, vector is faster and produces a better edge. The question isn't which mode is "better." It's which one fits the job.
Is the Glowforge Pro worth the price over the Basic or Plus?
That depends on your operation. For our team, the pass-through slot was the deciding factor. The Basic model doesn't have one, and we occasionally engrave long boards for bar tops and table signage. Being able to feed material through the machine makes those jobs possible at all.
The 45-watt tube also shortens runtime on thicker material. When you're running production batches, that adds up. But I'd say this: if your work is mostly engraving pre-cut items like phone cases or tumblers, the Plus will probably be enough. The Pro shines when you're cutting larger pieces and running steady volume.
I can only speak to our context though—a 50-person company with a maintenance team and consistent workflows. If you're a solo maker with irregular demand, the math looks different. Your mileage may genuinely vary. I do not mean to oversell the Pro—it has its quirks. But for our workload, the capability difference is real and visible in the output.
Hidden costs and things I wish I'd known
A few line items weren't on the original quote:
- The Smart Filter. Our workshop doesn't have a window vent, so we needed the upgraded filtration system. It works well, but it's an added cost.
- Software membership. The core Glowforge app is free, but some design content and premium features sit behind a paid tier. We rarely use it, but it exists.
- Material testing. Budget for a learning curve. Early projects will burn, crack, or come out lighter than expected. That's normal—it's how you learn the machine's limits.
Is the Glowforge Pro the right laser cutter for everyone? Probably not. If you engrave small blanks occasionally, the less expensive models will do more than enough. But if the output quality reflects directly on your brand, the Pro is worth a serious look.
