Step 3: Measure your projects against the bed size

Quick spec-sheet version: the Glowforge Pro bed size is 20 by 11.5 inches, and it has a passthrough slot so you can work on pieces longer than the bed. The Plus and Basic models have an 11.5 by 11.5-inch work area with no passthrough.

Now the real cost question: does any of your work need the full 20-inch side? Not 'could it fit?' — does it need it?

Pull your five most common projects and measure them. If you're making signs, engraved cutting boards, or custom tumblers, the smaller bed handles the whole job. If you're cutting long panels or bigger acrylic sheets on a regular basis, the Pro's extra 8.5 inches plus the passthrough is what you're paying for.

The mistake I watch for is teams buying the Pro because it sounds like a 'real' setup. That's not procurement logic, that's pride logic — and pride shows up on the P&L fast.

Step 4: Budget materials like inventory, not supplies

Wood, acrylic, leather, glass — material costs on a laser engraver stack up way faster than people expect. The hidden driver is waste. A sheet of good acrylic might cost $40, and half a dozen test runs can burn through $200 before you've produced anything sellable.

If you're comparing purely on watts per dollar, a cheaper import machine will look like the winner every time — until you sit with the software, the support, and the safety documentation. There's more to total cost than the power rating.

Bigger isn't automatically better. The assumption that 'maximum bed size is the safest choice' has it backwards. The Pro's larger bed earns its premium only when your material dimensions actually need it. An unused 20-inch bed costs the same as a heavily used one, every single month.

If you budget honestly, a Glowforge Pro will run you somewhere around $8,500 to $10,500 in the first year once you include the machine, the subscription, accessories, materials, and design files. The machine itself is only about $6,000. It's the stuff around the machine that doubles the entry price.
